Karenna Colcroft Guest Blogs For The AfterDark World

Moving on with LGBT month. I want to introduce a very good writer of m/m romance Kareena Colcroft.

Do You Believe In Magic?
And now I have that song stuck in my head…

Magic plays a big role in my two latest M/M romance releases. I don’t mean magic as it’s practiced in real life; I mean actual, can’t be explained, magic.
In my novel Lost Soul, Joel Turcotte is a highly-paid motivational speaker and author. He’s also what he calls a “soul sorcerer”. He can create things out of thin air, use magic to teleport himself from one place to another, and he uses magic to reinforce the speaking and writing parts of his motivation. His magic is fueled in a way that bothers him, though; to keep his magic—and himself—running, he must take pieces of human souls during sex. After accidentally killing his lover a decade ago, Joel has trained himself to take only tiny pieces, and he’s sustained himself with one-night stands. When he meets Lanny Hollister, that changes. Lanny has the strongest soul Joel has ever encountered—and he’s far too stubborn to let Joel get away with a one-time thing. (And the ringtone that Joel assigns to Lanny? “Do You Believe in Magic”.)
In my novella Bishie Sparkles, Grant falls in lust with Teruo, a character in the yaoi manga novel he’s just bought. When he wakes up the next morning to find Teruo in bed with him, Grant thinks he must be imagining things. Not only is Teruo a fictional character; he comes complete with “bishie sparkles”, little sparkles, hearts, and even small animals that surround him when he does or says something especially attractive. And Teruo can somehow pull a wad of money out of a pocket that doesn’t exist…It doesn’t take Grant long to realize that this Teruo isn’t just the manga character, but what is he?
Those types of magic may not exist in real life, but sometimes finding “the one” in our lives can seem like magic. That’s certainly the case for these men.
Since my birthday is Saturday, and today is the official release date of Bishie Sparkles, I’m celebrating by giving things away! Leave a comment to be entered in the drawing. One winner will receive an autographed print copy of Lost Soul (US and Canada only; if the winner lives in a different country, they’ll receive a PDF copy of the novel); one will receive a PDF copy of Bishie Sparkles; and three others will receive romance trading cards with Kyle Slidell and Tobias Rogan from my M/M series Real Werewolves Don’t Eat Meat. (No restrictions on winners of the cards.)
Lost Soul is available from the publisher, MLR Press, at, and also on, Barnes &, and All Romance Ebooks. Bishie Sparkles is available from the publisher, Dreamspinner Press, at, and will be available at third-party retailers.

Blurb for Bishie Sparkles:
Long-time yaoi fan Grant didn't expect to be so attracted to the main character of his latest purchase—and he definitely didn't expect to wake up next to him one morning. But that’s what happened. Even the sparkles, hearts, and small animals from the manga follow Teruo around Grant’s apartment. If Grant weren’t so distracted by lust, he’d find it really annoying.
When Teruo announces that he intends to stay with Grant because he has nowhere else to go, Grant is both pleased and terrified. Grant has been alone too long, and even with the sparkles, Teruo has made his way into Grant's heart. But if Grant can’t find the words to tell Teruo how he feels, Teruo might vanish as suddenly as he appeared.

The next morning, he woke half-exhausted and completely hard. If he hadn’t had to go to work, he would have turned over and gone back to sleep. Unfortunately, he had no choice about whether he got up and headed out the door. The company would probably run just fine with one fewer number cruncher for a day, but his bank account wouldn’t run so well with one less day of work that week.
He stretched, and his hand hit something. Something that felt an awful lot like another person.
Heart pounding, Grant yelped. A slightly higher-pitched yelp answered him.
“What the fuck!” Grant rolled onto his side and stared.
Straight into large blue eyes, set in a lily-white face that was surrounded by sparkles.
This is completely impossible. Especially the sparkles part. Grant rubbed his eyes, but the man beside him didn’t go away.
There was no way in hell he had just awakened next to Teruo.
“That’s it,” he muttered. “I never thought going insane from horniness was possible, but I’ve done it.”
“You aren’t insane.” The man beside him smiled. His voice sounded like music. “You made a wish, and here I am.”
“What the fuck.” Grant couldn’t think of anything more intelligent to say. Teruo Kanakawa was lying beside him, in his bed. A fucking manga character. This had to be another dream.
He reached out and tentatively touched the other man’s arm. He felt solid enough, given that he was supposed to be just a drawing.
“I’m real,” Teruo assured him. “I’m as confused as you are, but I’m real.”
Grant finally managed to say something else. “You’re sparkling.”
“Am I?” Teruo pulled his hand out from under the comforter and stared at it. The sparkles shimmered in the early light that filtered in between the slats of the room’s venetian blinds. “Cool! They’re so pretty.”
“Um, yeah.” Grant’s mind boggled. The sparkles might have been pretty if they weren’t surrounding a man who shouldn’t have been lying beside him

  1. A soul sorcerer? How intriguing!

Great blurbs Karenna and many awesome sales

  2. Thanks, Dawne :) The soul sorcerer sprang from my husband's subconscious, and I fleshed out the character (with hubby's permission) and told his story.

  3. And since Dawne is the only one who commented other than me, she wins! Congratulations, Dawne :)
